Along with the door, he’d inherited Tinsley’s desk, his reputation, and one badly-lit corridor’s worth of neighbors. These included a disreputable tattooist, an off-book accountant and, of course, The Mystic Oracle: Spirit Connexions and Communications.
LA, 1927 – Shane’s a jaded Private Eye. Ryan’s a two-bit Spiritualist. Together, they’re going to solve a murder.

The letter is from the mayor, which doesn’t immediately raise any alarm bells. He’s always sending out reminders for local events or random requests for assistance, so Ryan opens it without much thought.
Andrew’s curling handwriting announces: Dear Ryan, I would like to give you some information about an upcoming event: the Feast of the Winter Star. It’s a time for the community to come together and think back on all the good fortune we’ve had this year. A favorite tradition is the “secret gift exchange”, where everyone in town is randomly assigned to someone else. This year, your secret friend is: Shane. Don’t tell anyone! The feast will take place on the 25th at the town square. See you then! - Mayor Ilnyckyj
“Oh,” Ryan says thoughtfully. “That sounds like fun!” And then, he rereads the part that says: This year, your secret friend is: Shane, and everything comes to a screeching halt.
He looks down at his cat, who is calmly cleaning his paw. “Goldsworth, I think I might be in some deep shit.”
Or, Ryan, humble farmer, gets assigned the local hot doctor for the Winter Star gift exchange, and it goes about as well as you'd expect (poorly)

Ryan was the one who brought the topic up – on camera, during Mystery Files, which was stupid to begin with, but whatever, they’ll cut it out, like they always do when he and Shane go on pointless tangents.
(And he determinedly doesn’t think about how many tangents there are, how well they click, how they never run out of stupid shit to talk about, because that’s normal, that’s just how friends are, right? … Right?)

“Oh, not him, other Ryan,” Shane laughed when he followed their gazes. “My best friend Ryan, we’ve been childhood friends.”
That was about the time Ryan had enough. He didn’t wait for Shane to be distracted, because Shane would notice anyway, but he wouldn’t understand why it was a problem. So he just got up, excused himself weakly, grabbed his glass of champagne to drain it on the way, and went outside.
Ryan gets jealous. It's a painful thing.
