Summary
When you've lived the life that Law has lived, one of past pain and loss — and foresee a future of much more — you tend to make certain decisions. Deciding to send your crew off so that they don't get wrapped up in the mission you've set out on is one. Another, is to never mix the weird brandy you bought with what the guy in the alley was selling...again. But far greater than either of these is Law's biggest rule: never get attached.
Monkey D. Luffy doesn't really care for rules, does he?

He’s still staring at him, and Law frowns. What’s wrong with him? It’s not like he was doing anything entertaining, and whether he sleeps or works doesn’t change a thing for Luffy. He’s still going to be bored.
“I will not entertain your boredom, Straw-Hat-ya.”
“You need sleep,” Luffy repeats, and Law knows – deep down, by the tone of it – that he’s going to lose this fight.

Summary
Everyone gets marks at least once in their lifetime. It's just a matter of when. Marks can appear red, or black, the marks aren't set in stone. They're subject to change, they can disappear, change color, or even scar. A black mark means feelings on all sides are mutual, red means the love is unrequited, and well, a scar comes from a mark dying.
Law is not one easily persued, he's never gotten a mark, and finds them to be, putting it frankly, a load of crap. How could some inexplainable mark on the skin determine love anyway?
Luffy, on the other hand, loves so much. He's had four marks, all of which have scared. Luffy has been through a lot, he's convinced himself marks are cursed in the past. But this time he'll make sure it's different.
