Summary
He sees a pair of legs sticking out from one of the aisles, blood slowly trickling next to it. “Eddie, Eddie!” Buck sprints toward the blood.
Eddie is laying on the ground, clutching a bunch of rolled up gauze near his neck. His hazy eyes land on Buck, and he smiles a little. There’s blood on his teeth.
“Just a little graze,” he chokes out.
“Don’t talk,” Buck rushes to say, “you’re gonna be okay.”
“I know,” Eddie smiles bigger, but it's wonky. Falling apart at the edges. It’s not Eddie’s usual smile. It makes Buck’s stomach hurt.

Summary
“I feel like I spend my whole life waiting,” Eddie whispers, tracing the ceiling with his eyes.
“For what?” Buck asks, softly. His pinky moves to drag across the top of Eddie’s hand.
Eddie turns to him, hopes his devastation isn’t so clear on his face. “For it to come back.” His voice shakes, he sounds… afraid.
Buck’s already staring back, his eyes worried. “Who, Eddie?”
“Grief.”

Summary
He banged open the kitchen door and was greeted with…a completely normal kitchen. No sign of fire, nothing looked like it had been singed. It didn’t even look like water was used to douse an unruly flame.
Buck stood by the back door, waving a towel at nothing while Chris stood at the kitchen counter, his nose scrunched up from the smell. Buck caught Eddie standing at the door and gave him a goofy smile.
“Sorry about that smell,” he grinned, throwing a quick wink at Chris, “I was teaching Chris how to make eggs and he accidentally burned them.”
Chris laughed, a loud, unashamed one that Eddie hadn’t heard since Chris entered his teenage years.
His brain went offline for a minute. Chris burned the eggs, everyone is okay, no one is hurt. They are laughing. The eggs were burned and no one is being yelled at, no blame is being placed. They are full of joy.

“Do you ever feel… feel like you’re empty?” He pauses, watching for a reaction from Buck, but he doesn’t get one. “Like, all you need, all you want is to be as close to one person as you possibly can? Like that’s the only thing that could fill you. Fix you.”
It’s too revealing. Any second, Buck is going to laugh in his face or awkwardly scoot back. He’ll take his beautiful hand away and pack a bag and go stay at Maddie’s for the night. Then slowly, so slowly that if Eddie were normal he probably wouldn’t notice it, Buck will start to pull away from him.
He waits. He waits for his future.
“Yes. Always.” Is what spills out of Buck’s mouth instead.
