Summary
His Royal Majesty, Vil Schoenheit, sovereign of the beautiful, abundant, and well-secured kingdom of Pomefiore, is in want of a wife. The trouble is that the scrupulous king is too exacting in his ideals. He is perhaps the most vain, arrogant, stubborn man in the his whole kingdom. On top of that, he can't help himself to being attracted to men as well as women, a point of contention for neighboring kingdoms. The only loyal courtier and friend he can trust is Rook Hunt, duke, Royal Archer, and sometimes lover. With court and kingdom breathing down his neck, Vil knows that it's only a matter of time before the choice is taken from him.
Briar has no family to speak of. Abandoned at her hometown's orphanage, she claims no family name or ties. She is a farmer, gardener, and midwife, and is content with such a life. However, her world is turned upside down thanks to a couple of fateful interactions with a certain duke who arranges a strange position for her in the royal castle. Vil and Rook are obsessed with beauty, so when they happen upon a rose in the midst of thorns, both men begin to compete for her affections. Who will win: the king with the heart of ice or the amorous duke? But why on earth can't she have both?
