Amaris choked on her tart, coughing into her napkin. She looked at Claude, whose jaw was so tight it looked like marble.
"Oh, Martha, no," Amaris said, her eyes dancing with mischief. "You’ve got it all wrong. This isn't my brother."
Martha winked. "Oh! A cousin? A bit of a brooding type, but I suppose the pretty ones usually are."
"No!" Amaris laughed, deciding to drop the "bomb" just to see what would happen. "Actually, he’s my grandfather."

Claude and Lucas were standing near the buffet table, looking particularly sharp in their formal black and gold uniforms. As they both reached for a glass of champagne, the light caught the matching, heavy gold bands on their pinky fingers.
Luciana (6) and Amaris (9) gasped in unison, crimson and jeweled blue eyes widening in shock, respectively.
"Luci, look!" Amaris hissed, pointing a trembling finger. "They’re a set! Papa and Grandpapa are a set!"
