I’m close enough now that I can see the pulse thrumming in the hollow of her throat—fast, erratic, terrified. The mask of indifference has completely dissolved, replaced by something jagged and cruel. "I remember the way you looked at me when I was between your legs. Does Jere know about that? Does he know that while he was snoring three feet away, you were screaming into a pillow because of me?"

"Belly, look, in all seriousness," he says, catching his breath but still grinning, "you can't hire an escort. I can’t believe Agnes actually suggested that."
My eyes widen. "Oh my god, Conrad, no! She wasn't suggesting I hire an escort. She was suggesting..."
The words die in my throat. I trail off, looking at him—really looking at him—and realise there is no version of reality where I can comfortably say, 'She was suggesting you pretend to be my fake boyfriend so I can trick my ex into thinking I'm dating a brilliant, brooding Stanford doctor.'
"What?" Conrad asks, his smile softening into something more curious, more focused.
"What'd I miss?" Agnes’s voice cuts through the air as she slides back into the booth, drink in hand, sounding way too cheerful for someone who just abandoned her post. She looks between us, her eyebrows practically reaching her hairline when she sees how close we’re sitting.

There’s the slightest pause. He raises an eyebrow, just a fraction, just enough to register. “Nice to meet you,” he says.
Just like that. Like they’re strangers.

Belly crossed the kitchen and rested her hand on the back of a chair, grounding herself in the solid wood beneath her palm. This was all suddenly feeling so fucking surreal, she was half-surprised her hand didn't travel straight through it like a ghost.
Her body was humming with it—a low, contained panic that she couldn’t settle. And she knew she should say something else now. She knew she should be talking more. But then footsteps sounded in the hallway before she could gather her thoughts.
Summary: An alternate Season 3 where Cousins feels extra crowded.
