Lucy drops her head to Kate’s shoulder. “Full disclosure,” Lucy begins, and Kate knows already that this is her conversation-starter. “Tennant gave me a quick run down. Said you might need a bit of support.”
Kate takes a deep breath, fixing her eyes firmly on the distant lights of the harbour. If she’s going to talk, properly talk, she can’t look at Lucy for it. “Her name was Rebecca.”

Lucy’s fighting for her life with a map on the wall, as stranded as she predicted as she squints at the faded lettering. “Back to the infection clinic,” she murmurs to herself. “Left, left again, then right. Middle door.”

Lucy almost jumps out of her skin, whipping around and almost dropping her coffee at the sight of the woman before her. Tall, gorgeous, blonde, gorgeous, white coat. Even her lab coat is spotless, falling just above her knees - not that Lucy’s eyeing up her legs. Not really.

Twenty-four hours before departure, and Lucy is totally fine. And by that, she means she hasn’t completely freaked out just yet, nor has she called in a bomb threat to get out of it, which is about as fine as she’s going to get.

She’d gotten used to the gentle weight around her ring finger, to the feeling of matching jewellery on Kate’s hand resting against her bare skin. She keeps going to fiddle with it in their debrief meeting, in the traffic on the way home, each time remembering with a strange feeling that it was just for their covers. Tennant politely doesn’t comment on the way Lucy stares at it as she fills in the inventory check. It’s stupid, she knows it is. It’s one of tens, if not hundreds, of accessories the organisation has on-hand for undercover agents, having to be meticulously checked back in for any trace evidence. It was never real. Not really.
Or: Lucy can't stop thinking about those wedding rings.
