It hits Eddie like a freight train and he stumbles forward a few steps, effectively silencing his friends behind him. He was so prepared for it to happen next week, he didn’t even consider that it could happen inbetween.

Eddie and Buck have been married for years, after a chance meeting during Eddie's second deployment. After he applied for the fire academy, Buck had to go overseas one last time. But he goes missing during a mission and after almost a year, Eddie is close to giving up hope.

Tommy clears his throat. “Do you wanna come over to mine tonight? Not in a- I mean, my place is like five minutes from here and yours is halfway across town and you look absolutely beat, darling.” Tommy stops again, shakes his head a little. “I mean, you look great. You do. Of course. But, tired, you know? Which is totally understandable. But you probably wanna sleep in your own bed, which is fine, of course- ”
Buck’s brain needs a little time to catch on. “No, yeah, if- if that’s alright with you I wouldn’t mind coming over.” He risks a peak to his left. “I’d like that.”
There is a smile tugging at Tommy’s lips and Buck’s heart lurches in chest as if it’s so full of- of something it needs more room to keep beating.
”Great. Five minutes, I promise.”
Buck doesn’t really think he’d care if they were five hours away from Tommy’s place. His gaze is fixed on their still intertwined fingers and on Tommy’s thumb gently stroking the back of Buck’s hand. And slowly, that nameless, special feeling in his chest gets a little more specific.
