Summary
Mike hates this time of year.
The leaves have all fallen, covering the ground like puzzle pieces in their rightful places, so the trees are bare, naked, and dead. It hasn’t yet snowed to round out the rugged edges of the town; there are still sharp edges everywhere Mike looks — and trust him, he looks — and it feels like the atmosphere is eternally toying with him by turning dark with rumbling clouds, only to dissipate within an hour. It also gets dark at four p.m. for no reason other than to piss him off.
The world is, Mike decides, no better now than it was when it was ending.
mike's been living in hawkins since the world stopped ending, even though his friends left him behind.
well, maybe living isn't the right word.Bookmarked by m0rsec0de

Summary
And – that feels awfully revealing, so he adds, “I like the suit.”
Mike brightens, and he’s just a step or two away, now, and Will could reach out and touch him. “I’m glad,” he says, “I was – I was hoping you would.”
“Oh.” Will really wants to kiss him. “Well, I do.”
Mike beams. “Good.”
“Good,” Will echoes, feeling at a loss for what to say, but it doesn’t seem to matter when Mike’s grin only widens, and then his hands are on Will again, like they always seem to be, lately, and Will has no protests when they’re only a few inches away from each other.
Mike has been acting strange, and, if Will didn't know any better, he'd almost think Mike was flirting with him.
Thankfully, he knows better.

Summary
His father hangs up without saying goodbye.
When they step out of the booth, the sun feels less overbearing than it did 20 minutes ago. Instead, it is cordial in the way it beats down, as if more sympathetic in the spring.
Mike wonders what summers in New York are like.
Will grabs his hand as they navigate through a sea of every kind of person — from acid-wash jeans to pristine suits, from faux-fur coats to leather everything. He only drops it when they pass a cop wandering on the outskirts of the crowd.
"They're not supposed to give us trouble, but you can never be too careful," he explains.
Mike nods and tries not to redden at the use of 'us'.
Or: Ten moments out of order, spanning from high school to university, as Mike navigates his parents' failing marriage (courtesy of Ted Wheeler), being alone, and finding his way back to the only person he's ever really been in love with.

Mike-
For the love of God, stop leaving your tuna sandwiches in our locker, it smells like someone died, seriously. I will throw away your lunch box if I see it in here before noon and I'm not kidding. Your mom can send me an invoice.

or; Mike and Max are assigned the same locker during their freshman year of high school. It goes about as well as you'd expect. Better, maybe.

Summary
“I swear, when I find him, I’m gonna kick his ass,” Mike says, stumbling backwards a bit.
A year ago Max would have assumed he’s probably been concussed, and that he only means it because Billy’s hurt El, but Max knows now that Mike wants to fight for her, too. No matter how many arguments they’ve had, over things as huge as a telekinetic girlfriend to the inconsequential nature of Star Wars vs Star Trek, Mike is still standing here, in her corner, at the end of the world.
