    “Hi,” Vickie says.

“Hi,” Robin says, in a register impossible and strange. It’s like playing a note at the very edge of an instrument’s range. She sounds like her trumpet did when she was a child. She clears her throat. “Hi? Uh, movies, we have movies? Can I help you with any— uh, do you need—”

She winces. They stare at each other for a moment.

“Can I ask a question?” Vickie says, abruptly. She sounds, still, determined.

“Monsters aren’t real,” Vickie says, feels a little too desperate for how normal a sentence that should be.

“They— yeah, they don’t seem like they would be,” Robin says, and then, “Hey, hey, don’t worry about it, it’ll be over soon, right? It will all go back to normal soon enough.”

    Summary

Steve leans against the side of the boathouse and lets Eddie fumble with the cheap Bic lighter for a minute before he clears his throat and says, “You want a light?”

It's hard to read his tone. There's a bitter, suspicious, self-defensive part of Eddie that wants to lash out, but instead he grips the lighter until the plastic creaks and says, “Sure. If you have one.”

“Yeah.” Steve digs in his pocket and comes up with a nice Zippo. He doesn't hand it to Eddie; instead, he flicks the flame on and holds it out for him to lean down, and there's an intimacy to it that Eddie wasn't quite expecting. Like one of those old Leyendecker paintings. He imagines this tableau sketched out in clean art deco lines: the prom king and the freak. A study in contrasts.

Or: In which Eddie survives the Upside Down, and Steve Harrington turns out to be nothing like he expects.

“What are you looking at?” Eddie asks.

    “Your mouth.”

    “Why?”

“You have a nice mouth,” Steve says through gritted teeth.

Taking advantage of the distraction, Steve leans over and snags the flannel Eddie had been wearing out from behind him, shrugging it on quickly before Eddie realizes what he’s doing.

Annoyingly enough, it takes several minutes for Eddie to notice.

No, not the flannel,” Eddie warns when he finally glances over, closing his notebook slowly and putting it to the side. “You’re holding half my wardrobe hostage already!”

Steve snickers, standing up and backing away a few feet.

“I guess you’re just going to have to come get it, then.”
