Summary
After all sense, all honor, all hope are lost to Jurko Bohun in the ashes of Rozłogi, after the object of his adoration and ruin slips through his fingers, Bohun turns to Khmelnytsky's camp and the only thing left that could quench that fire of devotion. After Jan Skrzetuski has been forced to watch the Rebellion lay waste to the Commonwealth he swore to defend, after rage festers in him like a feverish wound, he is sold off to the young Cossack Colonel like common war booty. Through the fog of hate and pride, they come to realize they find more understanding in each other than in the mad world around them. But the road keeps leading them back to where it began, to the ashen wastes of Rozłogi where titles and ranks are stripped away and nothing but cold steel and the power of their own devotion will guide their fate.
