James Potter is a great friend.
This is why, when he suspects his best friend's little brother of dating one Barty Crouch Junior, Hogwart's rumoured psychopath, he decides that he needs to stop this. And what better way is there to get Regulus to forget about his maniac of a boyfriend than to seduce him and make him fall for James himself instead?
The plan might be a little mental, but it's for Sirius, James' best friend, and for him, James will follow through on it. Even though he himself has nothing to benefit from his plan - as far as he's aware.

Regulus Black does not need to be convinced of James Potter's charm and grace. He has been enamoured with the messy haired boy ever since he first laid eyes on him.
So when, all of a sudden, James keeps popping up in his vicinity, more than Regulus is used to or can handle, Regulus doesn't know what to do with himself and his fracturing self control.
He thinks the best course of action is to bully James until he leaves him alone.

Smoke spilled from Barty’s mouth, and he looked over at Regulus, his eyes unreadable. “People like us don’t have the privilege of doing it another way, do we?”
Regulus paused at that. “Who are people like us?” he asked, his voice faint.
“Damaged, fucked up people. We didn’t grow up normal. We don’t get to be normal now.”

Regulus' summers between college years usually consist of walking around Montreal, finding new places to hide from the world and trying his very best to ignore his family. However, this summer is different. His parents are spending it in France and therefore offer him an ultimatum: France with them, or Ontario with Sirius. France is out of the question. Which leaves a glass front lake house in Ontario. A house owned by James Potter's family, Sirius' college best friend, and as far as Regulus is concerned, a total prick.
Drawn magnetically together, James and Regulus embark on a three year long secret situationship. Its casual. Its nothing. Well.... until it isn't, and secrets have a way of worming their way to the surface... eventually.

Summary
At the beginning of the Hogwarts 1977-1978 school year, James Potter finds a cat and Regulus Black finds a Horcrux.
These events are not unrelated.
What follows is a deal to their mutual benefit: James helps Regulus hone the finer details of advanced transfiguration, and in return, Regulus teaches James what he knows of occlumency and legilimency. James is pleasantly surprised by how much he enjoys their lessons, certainly more than he thought he would considering what (admittedly little) he knows of Sirius’s younger brother. Regulus, for his part, thought he was smart enough to know that anyone with as many secrets as him has no business teaching fucking mind reading to another person. Especially when that person is James Potter.
There is affection—the kind that only comes from meeting someone who you never expected to understand you. And there is war—a looming thunderhead that neither of them wants to see consume the other.
The rest is a matter of secrets, family, and letting go.
