The shadows wrap around him. The Soldier marches back to its target and the handler grins. The air smells like tobacco and filthy ice and death. The man with bullets in both his kneecaps begs as the Soldier approaches, just like Bucky vaguely remembers the same man doing fifty years ago.
“Please,” he calls to the Soldier, an echo of the plea it gave its handler.
This time, the Soldier doesn’t hesitate. (Bucky hadn’t hesitated.) It slits the man’s throat. Blood flies from the artery the Soldier (the ghost, the past, the pain) severed.
This time, Bucky flinches. The Soldier doesn’t.//
