Missing scene from Queen of Shadows: after the rescue of Lysandra in Oakwald forest at the Faliq’s country home. Chaol isolates himself from the group and Nesryn goes to him as he finally breaks down over everything that’s happened, his guilt and grief over Dorian’s fate, and his attempted sacrifice.
'The weight of the loss not just his but the world’s in the absence of that bright prince and all his promise finally becomes too much for him and he crumbles beneath it. Gone. Lost. Worse than dead. For him. For nothing.

Set mid-Queen of Shadows, canon compliant, hurt/comfort, angst: Nesryn reacts badly to their latest fight with the Valg in the tunnels beneath the city; Chaol attempts to calm her down and understand what’s happened. Split POV; mostly Chaol’s.
“In the confused, shambling silence that always seems to follow a battle; when his mind is thick and confused, moving both too quickly and too slowly, where everyone’s bodies seem to expect more violence and terror and struggle to complete simple actions, he’s drawn back into himself by the stifled sound of a choked sob from behind him.
Turning he finds Nesryn, her slim form bowed over the same Valg commander plunging her knife into his chest over and over and over and over again, without seeming to realise that she’s doing it."
