Summary
“God damn it,” Lupe curses, dropping her glove as she bends over to grab the ball. “I just feel so—off."
“Fuck, Lu.” Jess sighs, chewing at her lip. “Would—god, I dunno. Would getting off help?”
Lupe’s a little thrown by Jess’s offer, but also has to admit that it makes a weird sort of sense. She finds herself surprised to realize that she’s not outright opposed to the idea, as strange as it is. It’s probably because—well, it’s Jess, and Lupe trusts Jess more than almost anyone else she’s known before.
Lupe’s having a bad day; Jess helps her out. It’s just a one-time thing.
But then they win. And, well, they can't break the streak.

Summary
McCready just gives Lupe a chin jerk and stays standing. Her eyes are bright and interested as she looks Lupe up and down, unblinking even when Lupe gives her a grimace in return. Lupe’s never exchanged even a word with her, and there’s definitely—something, now, something a little like wariness, a little flicker of aggression and familiarity that dances between them that’s not just team rivalry, not just feeling each other out. McCready has a strong face, with a wide mouth and a whole lot of jaw and angles and hollows and bones, and she doesn’t drop her gaze when Lupe tries to stare her down; if anything she sharpens, her eyes and her body honing in on Lupe, her presence somehow starting to crowd into Lupe’s personal space even though McCready doesn’t move a goddamn muscle.

Summary
Jess takes a final drag and maybe she performs a little, because she wants to see what’ll happen: maybe she licks her lips before, maybe she leans so the jut of her collarbone stands out underneath her shirt, maybe she makes a point to catch García’s eye when she inhales, when the smoke pulls into her chest, when she hitches her breath to keep it there.
Because García is watching, she has Jess pinned with her eyes, and this is probably a goddamn catastrophe of an idea (come on, don’t shit where you eat, McCready) but something about it feels alive to Jess, feels jittery and itchy like the buzz of a radio, like a snakebite under her skin. It feels right when the whole fucking day has felt wrong.

Summary
“Hmm,” Esther says, her voice closer now, dancing and playful. Max can sense her approach; she smells sharp and wintry and sleek, like a cold slice of snowy outside air with something green underneath it, something brisk and awake.

Summary
“I’m Jess,” the bartender adds, leaning back and tilting their head to look at Lupe, something considering in their eyes.
“I’m Lupe,” she says. She looks at the barstool she’s been leaning over. “Do you mind if I sit?”
Jess smiles: a real smile, maybe, Lupe thinks. “Not at all.”

Summary
“Hey,” J. McCready says. “I’m Jess.” She sticks out her hand and Lupe takes it, after a moment of staring, during which Jess spits several sunflower shells onto the sidewalk off to her left. “You’re the one who called about the bees?” Jess prompts, eventually, after Lupe stares a little more.

Summary
Maria feels like she’s drifting, like she’s floating in oily water trying to peer through the scrim of her revulsion to find Helena, to find the merit and humanity Val seems to see so clearly. They’ve run this scene three times already, and each time it ends with a little more viciousness left in the air between them.
