Summary
“What’s this for, hmm?” Louis questioned. He took his hand away, and leaned back. Again, Lestat stayed still. Candlelight was more mobile than electric, giving Lestat’s face the illusion of movement and expression, even as he sat silently.
Lestat closed his eyes, rocked back on his heels.
“‘For if you live according to the flesh, you shall die: but if by the Spirit you mortify the deeds of the flesh, you shall live.’” Lestat’s voice was thready.
“How long have you been here?”

Summary
"Florence’s children think her a naïve, sheltered housewife. Louis and Grace do, in any case. Paul doesn’t think much of anything, poor lamb. But Florence’s family was never as well-off as her husband’s. She worked before she was married, mainly as a typist in a law firm. Thirty years ago, the lawyers were all rich white men. Florence remembers very well the liberties they thought they could take with women like her. She can easily imagine Louis' man taking the same liberties with him, treating him like a pet or a toy. Louis deserves better than that. He deserves better than to be a pastime until this man inevitably finds a white woman to really marry him."
