Awkward silence met them for a moment, but Brendan broke it with a sigh. “So does your offer still stand, or what?”
May stared at him, eyebrows slightly raised. Took in how utterly at home he looked, surrounded by the trees and open sky, but zeroed in on the stiffness at the corner of his mouth; the only thing betraying his uncertainty. Oh, she hoped he was sweating.
Her face cracked into a grin.
“Hmm,” she said, pretending to think about it.“I guess so. If I have to.”
Brendan looked unimpressed. “I’m glad you’re so thrilled to have me.”
______________________________OR Norman is keeping secrets from May, secrets that have led her back to Hoenn. May huffed, bouncing backwards from the counter. She’d finished her muffin. “Just because I look like I crawled out from under a rock when I’m training doesn’t mean I don’t like to look like a girl sometimes.”
“So it’s not because of your date with Chase?” Brendan accused.
May’s cheeks blossomed a bright pink, confirming his worst fear. “It’s not a date.”
“You just got dressed up, and you’re going to meet him for lunch. It’s a date.” His head was spinning, and something lurched painfully in his insides. He probably belonged in an emergency room somewhere.
________________________OR There was one Brendan-approved strategy for being in love with your best friend: Keep any and all touching to a minimum. No smelling of her nice perfume. Never comment on her appearance, unless in jest. Definitely don't have a meltdown when she goes on a date with someone else.
