    It’s not that Kaveh had done anything to the children in his class. He wasn’t loud, or disruptive. He kept to himself and helped the other kids with addition problems. It wasn't his fault he didn't have any close friends. He was just… different.

    While the other children played make-believe and tag, screaming at the tops of their lungs, he’d draw on the wooden benches. If anyone approached him, which they rarely did, they’d be met with a straight, serious face, misplaced on a child his age.

    He wasn’t old enough yet to have learned that people like it when you smile at them, they like it when you laugh at their jokes and look at them when they tell you stories. It wasn’t their fault that they thought Kaveh didn’t want to be friends with them, and it wasn’t Kaveh’s fault for not knowing how to ask for it.
