It was one of those nights where the bitter cold of early February triumphs over the tiny space heater working overtime in the corner of the room, and Yoshiki’s sheets were cold to the touch. ‘Hikaru’ had spent most of his recent afternoons sprawled out on the floor of Yoshiki’s bedroom, and the uptick in time spent alone together had made them both increasingly comfortable with a closeness Yoshiki had long programmed himself to reject. Pressing through the dead of winter with no end in sight, there were seldom cures for boredom that didn’t involve sharing body heat.

Love has always been there, stuck in the inbetween. If you close your eyes and strain your ears – push past the buzzing cicadas and droning powerlines, past the rushing water and crashing waves, past the gasping and choking of life violently separating from body – love lives among the borders of it all. Love is a ruthless monster. ‘Hikaru’ has become too human.

Yoshiki and ‘Hikaru’ had a fight – nothing ‘Hikaru’ had intentionally caused, and yet Yoshiki can’t bring himself to explain to the entity living inside his dead best-friend’s corpse why he threw a conniption over him trying to hold hands in the very public eye of their school.
‘Hikaru’ would get over it eventually, anyways. The two of them always made up, no matter how big or small the issue. And no one else ever had to witness these tucked away moments of seething fear and festering desire. No one else ever paid the price for Yoshiki’s inability to accept what grew deep inside him.
Except, now Kaoru wasn’t answering her phone.
