Summary
If, five years ago, anyone had asked the residents of the various holds, cities, and towns in skyrim what they thought the dragonborn might be like, should such a legend ever become true, many of their answers would have been painted in similar strokes - a bold, brave nord warrior, here to represent whichever side of the war the respondent favored, with a voice blessed by the eight - nine - to drive out their enemies and help one side or the other reclaim their rightful homes. Perhaps someone to yield to the empire, to prove Talos to be no god, no need to worship a long dead septim when there is a living legend to look to now. Or someone to join the cause of the stormcloaks, to shout the thalmor from their lands and drive out the empire, restore skyrim to the nords, free to do what they like. A shining symbol, with stalwart friends and allies to stand in battle against their foes.
Instead, they get a half-feral, death-obsessed Altmer runaway who would much rather the entire country fuck off and dragons have the decency to go back to sleep for another century.
As one might imagine, things devolve from there.
