In this timeline, there is no blood. Nothing has happened that should, and everything has happened that shouldn’t. “It isn’t that,” he finishes.
Silence. An inhale. “Isn’t it?” Cheng Xiaoshi asks. A moment passes. “I told you I loved you, and I’ve never seen you look so sad.”

“Well-“ Reki started, cheeks flushing a bit in embarrassment before he coughed his nerves out, straightening, “He actively moves away from any of us when we get too close, y’know? Won’t even high-five me.” Reki explained, rocking on the balls of his feet, hands stuffed in his pockets, eyes fixed on the floor. Then, slowly, carefully, he looked up and met Joe’s eyes, a questioning glint to his eyes. “But he touches you every chance he gets.”

It’s one thing Kojiro is sure of, at least. So long as he walks this Earth, Kaoru will follow – or rather, walk steadily by his side. They’re bookends, the pair of them. Never one without the other.
