Looking around at the crowds of people on the ice, River let out a small sigh, watching as her breath clouded instantly in the frosty air. All around her, people were enjoying the fair; eating handfuls of warm roast chestnuts, perusing the stalls, laughing and mingling on the frozen river. A handful of braver souls had even managed to find some ice skates and were carving up the ice slightly further downstream. River could hear their shouts and giggles of delight from time to time over the bustle of the crowd.

River sat back contentedly in her chair and took in the view. They were sat having coffee on the sun terrace of the big Italian villa, overlooking the beautiful gardens. If she turned her head slightly, she could see vineyards and the rolling Tuscan hills in the distance. She could hear the sound of cicadas chirruping around her and a small water feature in the garden below was bubbling gently away.
It was idyllic. The perfect place to get married.

She takes another deep breath and tries to calm herself. She needs to do this. She needs to be strong for both of them, she knows that. She can’t unravel in front of him. Not this him anyway. But she feels too fragile, too brittle to cope with this. As if one wrong step from either of them at this moment will unspool their entire relationship right in front of her. That they will erase her entire past with one hastily spoken insult or cutting remark.
