No one knows how to deal with a widower’s pain and loss. No one wants to. But Castorice has faced even more death than he has, and she hasn’t let him pull away from the world despite his attempts.
After the unexpected death of his partner, Khaslana, about a year ago, Mydei meets photographer Phainon at a gallery exhibition he's forced to attend by his friend, Castorice. Unexpected sparks fly between them as they grow closer through Phainon's photography.

“They welcome me like I haven’t spent the past week piercing holes through their beloved savior,” Mydei comments once he and Phainon manage to find some peace at the corner of a stairway.
“Careful- you’re still a little purple here,” Phainon replies with a tap to his own shoulder.
Mydei smirks and hopes, childishly, that the princess will at the very least allow him to borrow her knight. It’d be a shame to never spar again.
Or: The war is over, and Mydei is sent off to marry the Okheman princess... Or so he thinks.

Summary
Phainon looks like the type who knows what he’s doing: the type who makes sweet love, the kind that twists your stomach in fat knots and has your eyes swell up because you finally feel cared for, that breaks you down into unrecognisable pieces to be tossed at sea like ashes.
Mydeimos thinks of how many people Phainon’s hands have touched before him, younger and prettier than him, all gathered at the bottom of these breathtaking ocean eyes, and he thinks he’s not a people’s person but he could see himself becoming a Phainon’s person.
