Derek couldn't talk about the fire. Even just thinking about it made him feel like his skin was getting peeled off. He buried his head into his knees, squeezing his eyes shut. He felt sick.
Someone sat down beside him. He assumed it was Laura, or maybe a deputy coming out to bring him inside. It was possible he had been out here for a while.
When he lifted his head, he was making eye contact with a child.
