Niko watches Edwin unclench his fists and steel himself, obviously trying very hard to hide his pain for her sake. Sensing his distress, she reaches over to place a reassuring hand on his arm. “You know, you don’t have to be brave for me. It’s okay.”
“I…” Edwin trails off, tears glistening in his eyes. He looks down at where Niko’s hand rests against his arm and blinks as if still in disbelief that she’s really awake and well. “There was a moment when I thought we had lost you. And in that moment, I realized that if you truly did not make it, I did not know how I would ever be able to recover. I simply could not bear to think about this world without you in it.”
(in which niko doesn’t die, charles and edwin get some space from each other, and things are not any easier)

Summary
Crisp, thin air. The rough scrape of blades on ice. The jumbled, unintelligible echo of male voices, ringing off the rafters and bouncing through the empty seats. The familiar smell, sweaty equipment and rubber flooring and Zamboni fluid. Luke’s taken to closing his eyes sometimes, cutting off his primary sense, and just absorbing the noise and the scent and the feel of cool air on his cheeks. That way, regardless of where he is, an arena still feels like home.

Nancy takes the opportunity to properly stare. Robin’s nose is pointed; her lips naturally part a little, leaving her front two teeth half-visible; her eyelashes are like spider legs, splayed top and bottom, painted a deep black. She’s got the kind of face you remember for the rest of your life. Nancy’s gaze catches on the wide gap between Robin’s brows. My lips would fit there perfectly, she thinks.
Nancy has never run from what she’s wanted and she’s not about to start now.
