gyuvin— he smells like apples, faintly sweet, just a little tart, just at the edges of the iron. ricky smells like milk, heavy and creamy and warm. yujin smells like rust more than anything, and it terrifies zhang hao. sometimes he has to grab him and hold him as close as he can, just so he can make sure he’s safe, just so he can remind himself that he’s strong enough to withstand. matthew smells like citrus.
matthew — he’s new, relatively speaking. to be fair, gyuvin and ricky and yujin and all the others that came with him are also new, when you look at it from the perspective of two hundred and seventy something years. zhang hao’s known a lot of people and he’s gotten to know a lot of scents. he’s known florals and fruits, people who’ve smelled like dust and earth and rain, people who’ve smelled like smoke, like cooked, savory meats.

“well,” zhang hao says, “then we’ll just have to run away.”
hanbin can’t help the laugh that escapes him. god, he’s selfish, but he’s glad to have zhang hao here. “if i didn’t know there were trackers planted in the hot summer, i’d plan it now.”
“we’ll take the jelly pop,” zhang hao says, waving a dismissive hand. hanbin tips his head back up to the sun and lets himself smile. zhang hao’s precious little speeder seats two — four with the occupancy safety disengaged, and six with extra oxygen tanks illegally installed to the filter system.
“i’ll pack the snacks,” hanbin says.
hanbin is captain of the greater galactic republic’s sixth 101st regiment. zhang hao is his copilot. four 101sts before them have gone down to the navy’s death missions, and now it’s their turn. somehow, they just need to be better than everyone else.

“hyung,” hanbin tries again, taking a step forward. “i loved you, i know you felt the same way. just tell me what changed.”
zhang hao looks over, then turns away again quickly. he reaches a hand out and pushes it against hanbin’s chest until he takes a step back. “are you done?” he asks.
“for now,” hanbin says.
zhang hao crosses his arms, closes his eyes. “what if–” he stops, takes a shaky breath. “what if i didn’t love you?”
eight months later, hanbin and zhang hao find closure.

Summary
here’s what hanbin does know: he is zerobaseone’s leader, and he has a responsibility to make sure that his members are taken care of. it’s part of his job to make sure their needs are met and their spirits stay high. that being said, he doesn’t think anyone would really judge him if he didn’t include offering up his blood to the secret vampire member of the group as part of his duties. still, hanbin will do everything that is humanly possible to make sure zerobaseone is taken care of — sometimes even more than what is humanly possible.
hanbin convinces zhang hao to let him do something nice for him.

Summary
The language Zhang Hao knows best is that of victory, where first is only a place to reach and a prize to win. No other type of first has ever mattered. Then came Hanbin.
“Hanbin,” Zhang Hao says, soft, dazed.
For a few moments, that’s the only word he can think of. You’ll give me this too? is what he means. Hanbin stares up at him, eyes warm and dark, and Zhang Hao thinks he must understand. When it comes to firsts, Zhang Hao ripped through his own like the wrapping off a present, quick and efficient, impatient to get to something better. He’s determined to be careful with Hanbin’s, to tuck them close to his chest like something not just to be taken but also kept.
“Hanbin-ah,” he says again, shakier now. “You don’t even know half the things you’re doing to me.”
