Summary
She can’t help but resent it, Sandra's careless, contrarian demeanor, but she can’t help but be drawn in by it either. For so long, she has— had— tried to take care of Pete, to make him let her, in the absence of his ability or willingness to do it himself. With that ripped from her, it’s only natural for her to try to redirect the instinct, only right that it should go to his child. Sandra is just the proxy for the time being, she supposes.
*
It breaks through something in her in her emotional state, through some hardened and uncharitable piece of herself. Something clicks into place. Maggie cares for others so fiercely because some part of her has to, and every part of her wants to. And Sandra feels as though she’s never in her life wanted to care as badly as she does now, even as she also wants not to care quite badly.
Because if she cares, between Pete’s death and Maggie’s open grief and her own unborn child’s somewhat precarious future, she may just fall apart.

Summary
Amelia Gardner is raised with the name of a father she’s never met, but her mom says she’s got his eyes, and when she’s old enough for it, his wit, his career.
Amy doesn’t trace her genealogy like that. Her eyes may look different from her mother’s, but they crinkle the same way when she smiles, and she blames Abbey for her sharp tongue, and she went to law school like her dad the lawyer, but she sees her career more as the extension of Lillian’s activism than her dead father’s work.
--
aka, Aaron Sorkin and co could never figure out what exactly they wanted to do with Amy and they also didn't execute that nebulous idea all that well sometimes, but I understand her though.

Summary
I know that life isn’t a story and all that, but I’m trying to figure out where to start this one. This story. Does it start with you? With meeting you? With marrying you? With losing you? I don’t know, Elphie. No, it doesn’t start with any of that. That’s a bigger story. This one doesn’t even start with me getting into this truck, not really, that’s the road trip. Which is technically different from this story. This just starts with that bottle.

Summary
She wants to talk to Brenda. Her finger hovers over her contact, almost calling. But last time Brenda called her it wasn’t from that number, and besides, Bea’s on vacation with the woman she loves, and she has far too much pride to admit that she’s not just mad at Brenda, she misses her.
She misses her so much it hurts, so much that everything makes her think of her, so much that every funny thing that happens, every story she acquires, they only make her sad, make her want to tell Brenda.
