Jasper thought he could feel the words though his chest, where they were pressed together, where he was suddenly enfolded in Carl's arms. One of his hands tried, shakily, to soothe across Jasper's back, the other cradled the back of his head. It was quiet there. Warm. It was distant for a moment. Like he was stood five feet back, watching himself suffocate in his father's grip. Like he was watching it happen to someone else.
But then the dam finally broke, and a breath punched out of him so hard he was flung back into his body, flung back into the fray.

Hardy merely raised his eyebrows and continued to wait. Just sipped his tea, continued staring Akram down like they had all the time in the world.
Akram heaved his own great sigh and reached to pull the file from his bag, sliding it across the table. It was thinner than it should have been, and newly worn from his repeated readings. A sad, forgotten thing.
"I believe we should… investigate the disappearance of Carl Morck," he finally admitted.

He used to work so hard for that smug grin, used to work for the chance to trace ancient constellations across the skin of his back, used to love being caught up in Mox's plans and games.
