"Fran," Michaela said softly.
Francesca opened her mouth. Nothing came. The pressure of weeks, months, years perhaps, though she had not known it as such, broke all at once.
She crossed the last distance and reached up, taking Michaela's face in both hands with more urgency than grace, and kissed her. It was not careful. It was not tentative, except in that first shattered second of contact when Francesca's whole body seemed to stop in terror at what she had done.
Michaela stepped back. Only one step. More from shock than refusal. But to Francesca, already raw with dread, it felt like an entire world withdrawing.
She tore herself away at once. The blood rushed from her face so quickly it left her lightheaded. Shame, hot and immediate, flooded every inch of her. "I am sorry," she whispered, though she scarcely knew if the words were audible.
Michaela's eyes were wide, stunned beyond speech.
Francesca saw that stunned stillness and mistook it entirely. What had she thought? What had she done? She backed away, then turned and fled before Michaela could recover enough to stop her.
