Xichen looks at his sworn brothers lying across the room. They seem so quiet. So still. He can barely believe what Wei Wuxian is saying. The rest of the world fades out as he stares.
“So what can be done?” he whispers.
“As far as I can see, we have two choices. Choice one: we destroy them completely. It would be difficult, but I think it could be done. But… it would be destroying them completely. It would mean shattering their souls.”
Xichen doesn’t feel the floor as he drops to his knees; it is just that one moment he is standing, and the next he is not. He isn’t even seeing them anymore, his eyes have unfocused, and yet they are all he can see.
Could he do it? Could he shatter their souls - destroy their very essence, prevent them from ever reincarnating, ever getting an opportunity to find peace - truly and utterly severing their link to this world and making fully certain that Xichen will never meet them again - all for the sake of the greater good?
“Choice two,” Wei Wuxian continues, “...we wake them up.”

He keeps his eyes and ears peeled, of course, for the enterprising few who might hit upon the idea of capturing and selling him to the Jin, or the Ouyang; but so far, Xichen’s clear favor has been protection enough. Meng Yao allows himself a small, inward smile. His Prince is beloved and strong; his servants are loath to cross him for both reasons.
He slips into the kitchens. There’s a maid lighting the fires, but he’s requested the place be left free for his use for the morning, and she bobs a bow when she sees him and makes herself scarce. The room is cool, still, filled with pale, early-morning sunlight as Meng Yao retrieves the tools he will need and lays them out on one of the long counters. He retrieves a few rags meant for cleaning and lays them on the floor, placing a copper bowl on top of them, to the left of his feet.
He tucks a small rolling pin meant for pastry between his teeth—his tongue, if damaged, he cannot regrow. Then he undoes the ties of his silk robe, letting it open around his waist, and sets the long carving knife just below his left hip, against the curve of his thigh.
