    Summary

The prospective punter is fit, though. Cool green eyes below dark, thick brows. His swept-back hair loosened, so strands hang over his forehead. He looks like an old-fashioned film star with the monochrome of his dark hair against pale skin.

Charles' usual spiel—"Do like what you see? You can see more if you like…"—dries up in his throat, and instead he blurts out, "What's the word that means a politer word for something?"

The man's mouth opens, closes and opens again. "A euphemism?" The man's voice is posh, but pleasant.

Charles leans in closer to the window and smiles. "Thanks, mate. It was on the tip of my tongue, but I couldn't get it. You okay? I can help with directions if you're lost."

"I'm not lost," the man says. "I came here on purpose." His voice gets smaller. "For sex."

    Summary

When a witch’s spell sends Edwin back in time to 1973, he has to learn the hard way that you cannot change the past.

You can, however, fill it with love.

    *

He finds Charles in the lounge, strapped into a bouncing chair whilst his mother naps on the sofa. Charles is wide awake, burbling happily as he sucks on a toy, a mop of fine curls already sprouting from his head. His eyes dart around the room and when they land on Edwin, they linger, and he pulls the toy from his mouth and smiles.

Edwin has never been fond of babies, but Charles is the exception to the rule. The smile on his face is not nearly as charming as the one that has Edwin weak at the knees, but it is adorable in a different way entirely.

Charles babbles a stream of nonsense and then throws his toy towards Edwin. It lands on the floor between them and Charles’s face crumples when he realises that it is no longer in reach. Edwin does not think. He steps forward and picks up the toy, crouching down before Charles to press it into his tiny hand.

He does not take it. Instead, his hands reach up to pat at Edwin’s face.

It's Charles' third summer as the fire lookout on Heather Mountain. Edwin, a writer looking for a bit of fresh air and inspiration, is the new relief lookout. Before even meeting, they begin to leave notes for each other around the tower.

aka the fire lookout au, a story told entirely by notes, journal entries, letters, and lookout logs.

    “Thanks,” Charles said, quietly.

“It’s just a shirt,” Edwin muttered, though it wasn’t really what he meant.

He ducked his head, suddenly unable to stand the sight at all: Charles, with exhaustion written into the cut-glass lines of his features and pain in the stiffness of his back and still he managed to look at Edwin with gratitude for handing over a fucking t-shirt.

Something was burning inside him, deep in the recesses of his chest, something protective and furious, that made him want to wrap Charles up in his arms - and in a t-shirt and his maroon jacket with the red plaid lining and his new black coat with its steadily-growing collection of lapel pins and maybe a blanket on top of that, and bundle him away somewhere that he would never be cold or hurt again. Somewhere Charles could be safe; maybe somewhere they both could.

devastating domestic au strikes again: the boys are alive together late 90s/early 2000s, they talk in circles around trauma, go to a party, fight off the horrors to protect each other, and Edwin comes up with the plan

"It's a quick trip on the ferry and then the light rail," he explains, neglecting to mention that quick meant four hours.

"We'll be back by tonight?" Edwin asks after spitting his toothpaste out.

Charles nods excitedly. "I'll drive us back, it'll be no issue."

Charles thinks Crystal is his girlfriend, but Crystal didn't get the memo. So when he walks in on her hooking up with her roommate, Niko, he has nobody but himself to blame. It's a good thing his childhood best friend, Edwin, is there to help him through this.
