Summary
Vanessa knows it’s a privilege to watch Daniela soften for the woman she’s decided to spend the rest of her life with and to observe the ease with which Carla loves her in return.
She asks about it, once, about how it feels to love somebody, and she doesn’t know why she wants to know, doesn’t know why it even matters to her, but Carla only pauses the TV and turns to her, aware, too, that Vanessa’s grip is loosening on girlhood, a wisdom in her eyes that says she might know something else, too, that she isn’t letting on.
“I never knew I could love someone like I love Dani,” Carla tells her simply. “And I don’t think I could ever love anyone else.”
“I’d like to love somebody like that,” Vanessa admits. “Do you think I will?”
Carla smiles at her softly. “If you want to, then you will, honey.”
Vanessa takes that and tucks it away.
