A Mechanical Engineering major and a Chem student walk into a McDonald’s.
Pretty decent set-up, right? Has all the makings of the kind of gut-splitter your druncle climbs onto the band’s stage and tells halfway through your sister’s wedding reception, effectively offending your great-grandparents so bad that they up and leave.
In this case—and what an unfortunate case it is—the humor starts and ends in the set-up.

Summary
Time is soupy, on the beach. A minute is an hour, but an hour passes with Johnny’s every blink. He thinks he naps a little. He reads a few pages of The Goblet of Fire and then puts it away. He listens to three songs and then gives up on that. Johnny’s elbows-deep in a Buzzfeed quiz that’s going to tell him which Panera bread bowl he is when one of Peter’s knobby hands reaches over and starts tugging halfheartedly on the waistband of Johnny’s swimsuit.
Johnny feels a disgusting, terrible smile burst across his face. He’s despicable. He should be locked up for this.
“Morning,” he says.
Peter blinks a little, all cow-like hazel eyes and confused flush. He grunts, wrinkles his nose, and yawns enormously.
Johnny needs to get his heart checked out, he thinks, because there’s something quite arrhythmic about it and he’s becoming worried about its function when he’s exposed to certain specific stressors. Stressors such as Peters. “Hey, ugly,” he says mushily.

Summary
Peter’s heart is about to fall out of his ass.
Johnny, on the other hand, looks cool as a golden cucumber, all impish grin and bright eyes.
Sue has her arms crossed. Oh god. Oh sweet death, come take Peter now—before he is forcibly castrated in front of the extended Richards clan.
The problem isn’t that lying makes Peter nervous. A good portion of the half-baked bullshit that spawns from his mouth is, to some degree, unabashedly false. It’s just that—despite how accustomed to idle fibbing he is, primary-colored suit aside, he is by no means good at lying. He’s a fucking terrible liar. And now Johnny is here, shouldering the brunt of masking their until-now secret usual place hookups, and Peter really shouldn’t make him handle this all by himself because his hair is sticking up so dramatically Peter could probably fit his hands in the exact places he’d been tugging an hour ago and his rear end has got to be sore. It was not a tasteful moment of public indecency.
Was good, though. Real good.

Johnny moves his elbows out of chemical-spilling longitude. “How’s work going?”
“Boring. Pass me the blue beaker?”
“Mm, looks like Kool Aid. My day was great, thanks for asking.”
“I didn’t, but okay.”
“What did I do? Well, Peter, I went to my hot yoga class and looked very sexy while doing downward dog, and I reorganized my half of the closet to be color-coded because it was stressing me out, and I came up with a wonderful idea which will give us loads of happy bonding time to balance how many hours you spend pretending I don’t exist while you mix your magic potions and hocus pocus alleles all the way across town.”
That gives Peter pause. He turns over his shoulder to meet Johnny’s eyes. “We see each other too much already,” he says. “We live together. You follow me on patrol. We spend half our time supine and naked.”
“We’re going to pick up hobbies together,” Johnny says, and Peter cracks the beaker.

There’s a soft glow across his face and Peter notices the little rope of flame he'd created that was floating a few inches from his side, illuminating the cut. Summary
It was the same song and dance they always did, and it ended the same way every time: Johnny in bed alone, wishing Spider-Man would stay but never finding the courage to ask.
The first time had been everything to Johnny. It was all of his wildest fantasies come true- Spidey’s strong arms holding him down, fingers pressed against Johnny’s skin hard enough to bruise, whispering sweet nothings in his ear as he fucked into him hard enough that Johnny was reduced to incoherent thoughts and helpless moans.
Or, Johnny and Spider-Man have a friends with benefits arrangement, and it only gets more complicated from there.

Summary
Starts with the events of Marvel Knights 4, where the FF's money is all swindled away, and they lose their home, so Johnny and Peter become roommates.
Johnny’s determined to prove to Reed, Sue, and Ben–-and most of all himself–-that he can pull this off, that he can stand on his own two feet, that he’s not just a pampered playboy, so he’s willing to do whatever it takes.
He’s never spent so much time around Peter before. He’s never had a chance to see Peter’s life close up or realize what an amazing person he really is, and not just because of his ability to pull off skintight spandex.
Eventually, he realizes. Maybe he had to lose all of the things he thought he needed in order to find the one thing he's always wanted.

“You really aren’t going to admit that you’re dating him, are you?” Sue says incredulously. She taps her finger against that very incriminating photo in the tabloid. “You’re kissing him, baby brother, right here.”
“Kissing? Spidey? Me? I would never,” Johnny scoffs, right as he finishes making a date to meet Spidey later that night. “Not in a million years. I am way out of his league. I’m so far above him he can’t even see me.”
Spidey’s going to see plenty of Johnny later tonight, but Sue doesn’t need to know anything about that.
