“That boy of yours is going to fall off the roof,” her father grumbles but the quick glance he shoots her tells Ingrid that he’s more amused than anything.
“He’s not my boy.” Her eyes follow Sylvain, and even from this distance, she can see him squinting at the tile. “He might fall off the roof though.”
“Is he not?” her father pushes. “Then what’s he doing up there?”
“Fixing it, I think.”
Her father scoffs. “He has no idea what he’s doing.”
“That’s probably true.”

There was a tug at Sylvain's heart when he looked at Ingrid. He had been going over that pull in a painfully, self-sabotaging spiral ever since. Because she was fine. He had spotted her walking toward him wearing the grin of victory that, although still visible, had slowly wavered into a tired shadow of a smile. She wasn’t limping, wasn’t bleeding, wasn’t missing any limbs. So why did his heart stop?
Sylvain finds Ingrid sitting under a tree and wonders if it's possible for them to to escape the life of nobility, or if they'll be trapped in their roles forever.
