They cling like bruised skins, soft and sagging, too far gone to peel apart. Press one, and the other oozes. What festers in one heart leaks quietly into the other.
It’s not love. It might never have been. Love would suggest some kind of softness that precedes the rot, some memory of fruit before it spoiled. But what they are is all aftertaste. It’s the bite you regret too late, the way mold blooms when you swore you just checked the fridge yesterday.
They don't speak of loyalty and they don’t need to. It’s not something they offer, it’s something they are. Like infection, or consequence, unavoidable and worsening the longer they let it fester.

Her nail brushes against his bottom lip, and he fights the urge to take the entire tip of her finger into his mouth. He thinks she might taste better than any cocoa or honey nougat carré ever could. Maybe a moccatine, or a pistache gianduja, or maybe just skin. Sweet, smooth, warm skin with the hint of sugary confection on her fingertips. “I came here because my old life was destroyed, and I was told Germany was where I could go to start over.”
“Oh, darling..” Alexis tuts sadly for him. “How wrong they were…”

“Oh, welcome,” she said, a soft smile tugging at her lips despite the surprise. "I’m Alexis. My husband's name is Victor Stein."
The boy nodded but didn't seem overly interested in her husband’s name. Instead, he leaned forward, narrowing his eyes as if he were trying to gauge deeper. "No," he muttered. "What’s your maiden name?"
“…Alexis Ness," she said, her voice quieter now. She didn’t usually offer that name unless she had to. But something about him made her pause, made her lower her guard just a little bit.
"Okay, Ms. Ness," Michael said, as if he’d found the answer he was looking for. "Nice to meet you."
