“Is this Joel Miller?” Asks the girl on the other end.
“Who’s this?” He demands.
“Oh, right. My name is Ellie Williams. I’m a criminal justice student at the university. I was calling to see-“
“Don’t call me again,” his voice is a growl, rage seeping into his veins as he puts together the purpose of this call.
“Mr. Miller, please just give me a minute. I run a true crime podcast about unsolved cases. We’ve already solved two-“
“Don’t call me again, do you hear?”
“Listen, there’s some evidence in your daughter's case that was overl-“
Joel hangs up the phone. For good measure, he blocks the number like Tommy showed him how to do.

“Okay. Look, kid, you can use my phone. I get that you got no parents, but you must have someone lookin’ out for you.” He pulls out his phone and goes to hand it to her.
“Sure, whatever, man.” She says, holding both hands in front of her, palms up. He goes to place it on her hands, and as he lets go, it just falls through her. It's as if her hands are just images with no substance, which she guesses they kind of are.
She looks at him, and his face is pale, and it finally clicks: he actually didn’t know.
“What the hell kinda trick is this?” He says, his voice tight with just the hint of hysteria.
“It's not a trick man. I’m a ghost. How did you fucking not know.”
IE: Ellie is a Ghost, and Joel is the only one who can see her. She needs his help to figure out what happened to her before it's too late.

Summary
When a woman he only distantly knows named Helen takes him aside after lunch one day with a “I’ve been meaning to talk to you about Ellie,” he thinks he’s about to hear about his kid accidentally starting a fire in chemistry or somehow knocking down a wall, and he prepares himself for it. She’s a good kid–hell, other parents have expressed envy that their kids don’t listen as well–but she has a mischievous streak a mile wild, and teenagers aren’t exactly known for their excellent impulse control or decision making skills.
Then what comes out of Helen’s mouth is, “Have you thought about if she might do better with a family?”
And he doesn’t think there was possibly a way he could have prepared himself for that.

Summary
Surprisingly, Ellie’s job at a fast-food restaurant wasn’t the shittiest part about her nineteen-year-old life.
Granted, it was still pretty shitty. But compared to her dodgy apartment, which for whatever reason costed an arm and a leg in rent a month, and that both her parents were dead and she’d been moving in and out of foster care until she’d finally turned eighteen, her job at KFC was a minor dissatisfaction.
None of her foster families had ever connected with her emotionally, or even really tried to. Ellie could admit that she caused trouble occasionally, and wasn’t the easiest child to raise, but a bit of familial love couldn’t have been too much of an ask for any child, right?
AKA: Ellie hates everyone at her job except for a certain regular, who has a liking for flannel shirts and has a strange sadness about him, who comes in and orders the same thing every day.
