“Thought you went to rehab.” Van doesn’t mean to say those words, and she hopes they don’t come out as accusatory as they sound, but she can see Nat’s shoulders stiffen in an uncomfortably familiar way. Van isn’t used to having it directed at her. “I mean—”
Natalie cuts her off brusquely. “Did. Bunch a granola crunchers with sticks up their asses,” she shrugs, letting silence fill the room for a long beat. “No wonder Tai picked it.”
Van’s fingers tighten on their mug, but they show no other reaction to Nat’s calculated bomb. There are a million questions running through her head, but she’s not going to give Nat the satisfaction of asking them. Instead she just continues drinking her shitty instant coffee and watches Sandy befriend a bunch of a beauty pageant contestants. Nat ends up falling asleep before the credits roll, curled into a ball and snoring softly, so Van simply shuts the TV off and pulls the blanket around them both before dozing off herself.
