She was so close he could smell her perfume- it smelled like ripe jasmine flowers- "Leave poor Quent alone," she said at Cletus, with a pretty scowl, "It's so hard to get him to have any fun at all and the moment he starts you think to torment him back into his shell?" she asked, and Quentyn resisted the urge to haul away from her, his cheeks burning.
"Fun?" Gerris asked with disbelief, "With the likes of you?"
Cletus and Gerris both laughed at the scowl on Ynys' face, and Gerris ducked when Gwyneth plucked a lemon from a low-hanging branch and threw it at his head."

This- she thought, as she wove her fingers through his thick, dark hair- this was happiness. It was forbidden and shameful and illicit, but it was happiness all the same. Perhaps she would like to tell her younger self that bit, too. That happiness was sometimes the worst thing you could ever imagine.
Oh, but it did not feel like the worst thing she had experienced, nowhere near it.
"You are far away, tonight, my love," he murmured, his voice soft and rich and thick like honey. Her hands tightened into fists in his hair- it was in desperate need of a trim.
"I am here," she promised.
