Summary
“Buck… Evan,” Eddie murmured softly. “You know I love you, right?”
“Edmundo Diaz,” Buck snapped weakly, panic bleeding into his voice. “No. We are not having this conversation right now. I love you too – but you’re not dying on me. Not today. Not ever. Okay? You don’t get to do that. Our son needs you.”
“B–Buck,” Eddie slurred. “You need to– stay– Buck, stay awake... "

Summary
His brain plays back the conversation he had earlier with Christopher’s teacher. How she thought he was Chris’ father. How she kept referring to him as Christopher’s parent. How it made him feel bad because he wasn’t, and it was like he was unrightfully taking a title that belonged to Eddie. Even if it was just one teacher at school.
He feels guilty that he didn’t correct her.
At first he thought it was because he didn’t want to embarrass her, didn’t want to make her feel uncomfortable. But he quickly realized it's probably because he doesn't really mind being seen as Chris’ father. Which felt unfair to Eddie-his actual father- and to Christopher. Because Buck has no right to be considered as Christopher’s parent. Has no right to see Chris– to love him like a son.
(or, four times buck gets mistaken for christopher’s father and the one time he actually is)

Summary
“Why are you hurting me if you want me to love you?” Buck asked, his voice barely a whisper.
"Because you weren’t seeing clearly, were you Evan?” He sounded so genuine. The exhaustion that was taking over Buck’s mind was almost believing every word he said.
“Are you seeing a little more clearly now, Evan?” Buck almost said yes, and maybe that would’ve been the better response, but he could only think about the person he needed right now.
“You’ll never be him.” Buck said. “You’ll never be Eddie.”

Summary
“I don’t know what you want from me anymore,” Eddie says through the door, his voice worn thin at the edges. There’s a soft thud against the wood, and Buck doesn’t need to see it to know – Eddie’s forehead resting there. “Talk to me.”
“There’s nothing to say,” Buck replies. The words come out flat.
“How about when you said you don’t need me?”
Buck exhales, slow and heavy.
Because that’s it. The lie he wants to believe because believing it would make everything hurt less. The one that keeps failing him – failed him today, almost got him killed, almost pulled him down into the pit because for one terrifying moment he was sure Eddie was gone.
One bad call, one broken dam, and suddenly Buck and Eddie aren't pretending anymore.
