Summary
Imagination is something that should be easily discerned from reality. Percy knows that his reality is never really imaginary, contrary to what everyone seems fond of telling him. And when his pre-algebra teacher transforms into a monster right before his eyes, he won't accept his lack of sanity as an acceptable answer, no matter how much Mr. Brunner insists. If Mrs. Dodds was a hallucination, then surely, Mr. Brunner must have imagined lending him a pen, too. He certainly has no idea where the old teacher may have misplaced it.

Kept awake by dread and wary of strange old ladies, Percy gives up on sleep and walks down the beach of Montauk, intending to dip his fingers in the cold, frigid water. But the water isn't nearly as cold nor as unwelcoming as one would assume it to be. Percy is certain that it's not his imagination.
