Summary
6.83 hours after the incident, it is quiet on the command deck. My drones have cleaned all traces of blood and fluid from the deck and MedSystem is set to high priority in the front of my feed. And SecUnit sits in the same chair it always does. It's sunken into the cushioning, so still it could be in a shutdown, but I can of course feel that it's awake. I haven't let it out of arm's reach since last night.
We are quiet for a long time.
We have to talk about this, I say eventually.
It takes 18 seconds to respond.
We do not, it says with finality.

Summary
It was weird— Pete usually didn't call during work hours unless it was something important. Ted felt a twinge of guilt when he thought of missing the calls. But it was probably nothing. Maybe Pete got an A instead of an A+ with a gold star on one of his weird genius tests. Something that was a Pete-level emergency, not a real emergency. Regardless, Ted had done his duty with a very responsible check-in text, and he was off work in half an hour anyway.
He made it through another game of solitaire, answered two emails, and was walking out the door at 4:54pm. (He was experimenting with leaving a little earlier every day to see how long it takes until someone notices. If ever.)
The phone rang all the way to the voicemail tone and Pete didn't pick up.

Or, Pete's parents find something out. He turns to Ted. His brother is doing his best.

The heavy tick, tick, tick never stopped.
Yellow made him sick these days. It was all he knew.
He wished that thing would have the mercy to kill him.
