“I’m Kara. Lillian hired me? To clean the pool?” It all comes out like a question, and the girl raises a dark eyebrow. She looks about Kara’s age, and she’s so freaking beautiful that it makes Kara feel stupid.
“I suppose she was finished with the last one, then,” the girl mutters. She’s so pale that she almost glows even under the big pool umbrella she’s sitting under, and after a second of sizing Kara up she pulls her sunglasses back up and goes back to the large book in her lap. “It’s not worth the money, you know.”
“What?”
The girl turns a page calmly. “She’ll eat you alive.”

When Kara is hired to clean the Luthor manor pool for the summer, what she wants more than anything (besides a good journalism internship) is to muster up the courage to ask Lena out. There’s only one thing in the way – Lena’s mother, and her wandering hands.

“I’m just…so glad you’re back in my life,” Kara says, wrapping Lena in a hug. Lena winds her own arms around Kara’s middle, tucks her head into the crook of Kara’s neck. “I don’t know what I’d do without you. Especially with Lex and Nyxly on the loose, and this mess with the totems, but even without that, you know?”
“I don’t know what I’d do without you, either.” And maybe it’s the four glasses of wine, but Lena feels suddenly overcome with the truth of that sentiment, and three little words she’s never said to Kara start to claw their way up her throat.
She only realizes she’s opened her mouth as if to speak when Kara prompts her, whispers, “What is it?”
Lena panics.
She can’t, won’t lie and say ‘nothing,’ and her mind scrambles until two words in an unfamiliar tongue come out of her mouth before she can stop them. “El mayarah.”
Kara’s arms tighten around her. “El mayarah, Lena.”
or
Four times Lena tries to say ‘I love you’ to Kara only for it to come out ‘El mayarah’ instead, and the one time Kara figures it out.

Summary
Eventually, the lasers recede, leaving incandescent flames burning bright in her eyes. Kara chokes on a sob. Her arm is throbbing, so do her ribs. The gashes, burns, broken bones, as deep as they run, don’t hold a candle to the real pain. And she’s tired. So tired. Her body aches, sags under the weight of something she can no longer hold.
Rain is pouring over her. It creates a canvas of blood, soot and tears on her cheeks; smears them in a botched attempt to wash it all away. It seems fitting, she thinks, that the sky would weep for her. With her.
Her legs give out. She falls to her knees in a puddle of water, feels the concrete crack under the pressure of a strength she doesn’t care to control anymore. More destruction. More pain. She tilts her head back, lets the water beat her angrily. She did this to herself. Maybe she was a fool to believe that she could ever hope.
“Kara!”
