Cheryl inhales sharply through her nose when she realizes that being so scared to touch and to tarnish means she's forgotten to breathe.
Without planning to, on the exhale, she says, "You were gone." She swallows around the high press of emotion. "It was dark."
This time, it's Toni's chin that wobbles. She holds Cheryl's hands tighter, like she might know fear too.
"I know," she whispers, painfully raw. "I know. I'm sorry. I'm sorry you had to see it." A beat. "I'm sorry you had to live it."

Summary
And all she can think about is the voice on the phone telling her that anyone close to her was going to be made to suffer.
All she can think about is how Gale's blood hasn't quite washed off her hands, and Mindy's eyes keep going distant toward the empty space at her side, and Sam hadn't even answered the phone when Danny was trying to warn her about Quinn.
So, as she watches Chad, Mindy, and Tara lean into each other, seeking comfort in the face of fear, Sam makes her decision.
Not to let Ghostface win, but to keep them from continuing to know what it's like to lose.

Summary
But she doesn't know if she'll ever get used to strangers looking at her like they know her. Like they hate her. For something she didn't orchestrate or execute.
It's degrading and, frankly, depressing, and it's harder on some days than others to get past it.
But she does. Because Tara loves her, and tells her that. Mindy makes it a point to stand close to her and link their arms when they're out in public, and Chad often slings an arm around her shoulders and says, "Don't listen to any of these chucklefucks, Sam, they couldn't survive a fraction of what we have."
And it helps, on the hard days. The shitty days.

She doesn’t limp anymore, except for on really cold days, and her breath only barely catches when she turns around and someone is standing just a little closer than she expected, and she’s, overall, for all intents and purposes, fine.
She’s moving past what they went through last year, as best as she can, and she wishes that others would believe her when she says that.
She wishes that Sam would believe her when she says it.

"What?" Fangs asks. He rises too. "What do you mean?"
She can't answer. She doesn't know what she means. She just knows. She just feels it. A deep, rooted fear — a dawning realization. A nightmare coming to fruition.

Summary
On nights when sleep is impossible, her mind drifts to the stories she used to read Tara when they were kids. Of little red riding hood and wolves, fairytales with clear lines in the sand between good guys and bad.
She thought back then that she would always be one of the good ones. She would be the one to protect those she cared about. To protect Tara.
These days, she's not so sure what side of the line she truly belongs on. Broken promises to her sister, the twisted pleasure of hurting another person, Billy's eyes searching for hers in every reflection—those aren't the traits of a knight in shining armor. Maybe she's been a wolf this whole time, just pretending at being a good person until her true nature is revealed.
