Danny stopped breathing for a moment.
“Over the years, I just couldn’t help it. I didn’t plan on it, Danny!” He sounded almost desperate to Danny’s ears. “I fell in love with you, and it’s just been so damned hard. And Daiyu Mei saw right through me. She knew how much you meant to me, and she took you. She planned to kill you. And I know .. I know you don’t feel the same way.”
Danny truly didn’t know what to say. “Steve…”
“Don’t Danny. Please don’t say anything. I just need time to get over you. I need the space. I certainly couldn’t stay on Oahu.”

The message was from Steve on the group chat he’d set up after leaving. Danny paid Kamekona and walked back to the bench, sitting down and picking up his phone.
When he saw the actual message, he almost dropped his phone back down again.
The picture was of Steve and Catherine both grinning. Steve was wearing a dark suit, white shirt, and blue/grey tie that seemed to perfectly match his eyes, while Catherine was in a chic white dress. They had their left hands out in front of themselves, and Steve had captioned the message ‘Just Married’. On their hands were matching wedding rings.
