“I don’t know if—” Eve starts. “I – I mean—” but her fingers are already flirting with the edge of the bandage, scrabbling at the adhesive, peeling it up. Villanelle sucks in a slow breath through her teeth.
“There you go,” she whispers, “good girl,” and Eve slips two fingers in under the bandage.

“You know,” Missus Garraty says, “he walked late. I was so worried, but William — his daddy — he told me not to. Ray would do it when he was ready. And then one day, he just pushed himself up and walked right over to me. His first steps, towards me.” She sighs, rickety and nervous. “When he learned to walk again, his first steps were towards you.”
That much is true. Pete, standing at the end of a railing with his hands held out. Ray, clutching that same railing for dear life and whimpering with every step until he could grab onto Pete and collapse against his chest. They sunk to the floor together, Ray fighting tears and Pete shushing him softly, until the nurses brought over a wheelchair.
“Is this where you tell me it’s better I leave?” he asks. “And warn me to stay away from him?”
Months after the walk, months of recovery, and Pete grabs the mail while Ray makes lunch. Things spiral from there.

“Ray,” Pete says helplessly. “I don’t know what that means.”
His big, dumb cow eyes are mean with tears. “The poet,” he shoves Pete in the chest, “and the f-f-fucking corpse.”
