“What if…” Shane says. “I have an idea of something that could help. Since I don’t want you to die.”
Ilya grins wider than he means to. He catches it in his tiny frame on the corner of the screen, then fights the urge to cover his mouth like a little girl at his archrival - who he fucks regularly, and thinks about almost constantly - simply admitting he prefers him alive.
“What, you coming here? You have early game. Three hours to fly to and from Boston in the middle of the night, I don’t think it will work.”
“No. Remember in Nashville, when I told you I, um, have a thing?”
“More specific, Hollander.”
“I could use it. I could…pretend it’s you.”

But yes—Jane. Whoever they are, Svetlana knows her Ilyusha is in love. It breaks her heart a little bit. Maybe once she had loved him enough to marry him for love instead of convenience, but that is not the way she loves him now. Now, she loves him enough that the idea of this Jane breaking Ilya’s heart breaks hers too.
And this is why Svetlana is his best friend: because she knows, wholeheartedly, that there is a heart to be broken. That Ilya is not a cocky, womanizing asshole (all of the time), and that he does not trust or love easily. He does casual very well because he knows he is too serious when it comes to love. Ilya is very good at not letting himself get attached, so for Jane to have stayed around for so long—she knows that he is in love.

He drives to the airport with an unshakeable urge to pull over and turn around. He smokes four cigarettes in a row before he boards the plane, then chews an entire pack of gum on the flight to try and cover the worst of the smell.
He exits the airport half-hoping that Shane has chickened out of the whole thing. Then he spots him, tapping his fingers against the steering wheel in the most boring suburban dad car Ilya has ever had the misfortune of laying his eyes on, and he’s so happy to see him that his legs feel unsteady beneath his weight.
