A wicked recklessness seized Harry. “Hermione and I met at school when we were both eleven,” he said lightly.
His words had an instant response from his aunt and uncle. Petunia gave a chirp of surprise and Vernon ground his teeth so hard Harry heard the crack across the table. The action was not lost on Yvonne, who looked between them in confusion. Dudley’s eyes were wide with panic, and he shook his head infinitesimally.
“But how could you meet at school?” Yvonne asked cautiously. “St. Brutus’s is–”
“A school for incurably criminal boys,” Harry finished. “I guess that means I never actually went to St. Brutus’s.”

AU. 2nd September 1995 (the second day of fifth year)—Hermione’s father has written a letter, to Harry instead of to his own daughter. The envelope is marked “READ ONLY WHEN YOU’RE ALONE.” For days, Hermione burns with curiosity, but Harry chooses not to show Hermione the letter. Instead, Harry sends Hermione strange looks when he thinks she is unaware, and he acts strangely.
Hermione is surprised by Harry’s new actions, but Dolores Umbridge is surprised unpleasantly.
