Summary
There was nothing Hiruzen Sarutobi found quite as tragic as when he looked at a child and glimpsed the shinobi they were destined to become. It felt... Heretical, like a betrayal of everything he and his mentors had fought for, but he knew it was inevitable. The world Hashirama envisioned was still a ways off and these children would need to fight to see it.
Hiruzen had felt that horror when he held his own children, he'd felt it every day he trained his students, every time he addresed a graduating class, he thought he'd known it well. Looking down at the blond sacrifice curled small in his hands, the smell of smoke and destruction still fresh on his clothes, the professor learned something new; he hadn't known that feeling at all.
