“I was twelve when I knew I liked him,” Will had confessed one night, when it was just them and Micheal’s “Party,” as he called them, having a sleepover in this very basement, everyone else long since fallen asleep. “But I knew I was… different before then, you know?”
“Trust me,” Richie had muttered, “I know.” And then he had done something that had surprised even himself- he reached over and kissed Will. Nothing big, nothing romantic even, not really, just a peck on the cheek. It was “I see you” and “I’ve felt your pain” and “It’s not just you” without the words that Richie always managed to fumble on, tripping over sincerity every time it mattered.
Will had just flushed all over, deep enough for Richie to see it even in the dark, and to ease the tension the Derry kid patted his cheek, maybe just a little harder than he’d meant to, but never enough to actually hurt Will.
“S’ok, man. We’re both fucked.”

Richie visits his cousin Mike in Hawkins for the summer and finds his cousin’s best friend may have more in common with him than he first thought.

Summary
Will had set out to see what was waiting for him outside of Hawkins. He was going to college in the city. Mike knew he was happy. Free, for once.
It didn’t mean he missed him any less, though.
The basement that used to be his sanctuary wasn’t even his anymore. It had long been taken over by Holly and her friends. It was their turn to have their own little world. He knew that it was time to start discovering the real one; he just didn’t know how. He never thought he’d look back fondly on the time when eight people lived in the house, but now, it just felt empty to him.
Writing helped him make sense of everything, but right now, the typewriter sat still on his desk. He didn’t think writer’s block was even possible after everything he’d seen. The sense of stagnation drove him crazy. Nothing seemed to feel right anymore. Was it all just part of growing up? He really hoped not, because if it was-
“Mike! Will’s on the phone!”

Summary
The Wheeler basement, in its best years, could more aptly be described as the first ever museum curated in the honor of Will Byers.
Of course, the same could be said for the respective bedrooms of Lucas Sinclair and Dustin Henderson, but while their displays are proud and beloved, the ones that embed themselves in the Wheeler basement are imposing, insistent. It looms over you like a warning. A threat.
Well, if you consider a pint-sized five-year-old Mike Wheeler a threat. Most don’t, some do. It’s up to interpretation.
