The light in the kitchen is dull but it still stings his eyes. He feels sick, his head is just fog; full of shadows and silhouettes, with glimpses of faces he used to know and people he couldn’t save. He tries to shake it off, closing his eyes to rid himself of the visions, but the scrawling’s stuck there behind his eyelids, red and glowing and pulsating — just like all those Markers back on that planet.

When everything else was falling apart, when the Marker’s influence ensured any other man would be tearing himself apart at the seams, Isaac managed to soldier on, to push past it, somehow keeping himself sane and grounded enough he came out the other side still breathing, even if he didn’t feel alive.
God, Isaac hasn’t felt alive in years.

Carver thinks for a second to disengage his helmet, to look him in the eyes before he turns to walk away, but he can’t bear the thought. It reminds him of all the times he argued with Damara, how he could barely bring himself to look at her. It makes him angry, angry at himself, angry it had to come to this, angry that even here, now, he can’t man up and face the repercussions of what he’s done.
